What’s Signal?

Signal is a text and voice call app for both iOS and Android. It additionally has a PC application, but the PC version requires making an account via the phone app first.

Communication sent via Signal is “end-to-end encrypted” (“E2EE”) – essentially, this means that messages you send can only be read by you and people who receive them. The encryption (and un-encryption) happens at both ends of the message’s journey.
This is different from some other forms of encryption because they are encrypted during the message’s journey – so there are points during the journey outside of your control when the message can be read.

The use of E2EE makes Signal a popular application for anyone seeking stronger information security. Look for “end-to-end encryption” or “E2EE” specifically on apps you use if you ever need to send really private things.*

* There are exceptions to this, as well. Famously, Facebook claims their messenger is “E2EE” but the ends are still visible to THEM, rather than only you and your recipient.

How Do I Get Signal?

Signal is available on the Google (Android) and Apple (iOS) app stores.

Or visit signal.org/install from your phone.
You must have access to a smartphone to use it.

Signal Uses Your Phone Number

Signal uses your existing phone number when you use the app. However, you can make a username so that you can connect to people without sharing your number with them.

To find or change your username:

On Android, open Signal > tap your profile icon.
On iOS, open Signal > tap your profile icon > Settings > tap your profile icon / name at the top.

People can also find you if they know your phone number. You can turn this on or off with this setting:

On Android, open Signal > Settings > Privacy > Phone Number > Who can find me by my number.
On iOS, open Signal > tap your profile icon > Settings > Privacy > Phone Number > Who can find me by my number.

By default, your phone number will not be visible to everyone in Signal.
However, people who have your number saved in their phone’s contacts will still see your phone number, regardless of your settings.
